Graduation Jitters

By Amanda King on February 13, 2013

Being done with college is a dream that many undergraduates dream of. The endless studying, lectures, midterms, and finals seem to stretch into forever.

This is my last year of my undergraduate degree, and I am terrified. What do I do after this? Life has seemed relatively straightforward for most of my life: Go to school, get decent grades, don’t get arrested, graduate, and get a job. The problem is, where do the jobs come from? Does a job fairy rain them down from the sky?

From what I understand, getting the dream job is something of a job within itself. I’ve asked people the same question over and over: Do you like what you do? The answer is usually “I like it well enough.” Is “well enough,” well, enough? Or is “well enough” the end goal?

Well, having a job actually related to the degree I am getting would be fantastic. I love to write,  read what others write, and share ideas. It’s a big community experience.

Starting here is a good step to take. It will help give me valuable experience, and I look forward to interacting with comments from anyone who reads this.

After I gain some experience, whether through internships or other writing jobs, hopefully I will be able to find something online or through someone I know. After all, the old saying is “it’s all in who you know.”

It’s true to a point. During a recent talk I attended, a speaker said they found their current job through a company where they didn’t get hired, but someone in the company saw their resume and forwarded it to someone they thought could use the skills the speaker had. Turns out, it was a good fit, and the speaker had a job right after they graduated.

Life isn’t always as simple as getting a job right after graduation; there will be bumps in the road. Perhaps I will have to have two part-time jobs to pay the bills while searching for the right job.

College is terrifying enough without the stress of thinking about the end game. I know everything will probably be fine, but until I know for sure what plan I will develop, it’s going to be a long semester.

So for my first post on Uloop, I want to ask: What is your dream job? What do you see yourself doing after you graduate? Or, like me, are you in a purgatory of confusion?
