Ohio State University: Finding the Perfect On-Campus Job

By Anna Lapp on September 1, 2012

If there is one complaint that college students tend to have, it’s that of money problems. With the rising cost of tuition, expensive textbooks, and pricey meal plans, students are crunched for cash. An easy solution to (somewhat) solving this problem is a job. While finding a job may seem like a tedious task, the best place to start is on-campus. Many on-campus positions are open solely to students. Whether working at a dining hall, a dormitory, or a library, all of them are viable options for earning a little extra cash.

Having personally worked as an “Office Assistant” in an Ohio State residence hall, I can say that the job reaps the benefits. Sitting behind a desk, serving residents with toilet paper, DVDs, sports or cleaning equipment, and the frequent loaner key (for those who lock their keys in the room), it proves to be fairly easy.

The real perk of “OAing” is being able to study on the job.  While the starting salary is a hefty minimum wage, the ability to crack open a Coke, chat with the residents, and solve a few Calculus problems in a short shift makes the job a valuable one. Unfortunately, only on-campus students can apply and maintain the full year position, but there are other satisfactory options to fulfill your job needs.

Campus dining services are always in need of workers. Whether working at one of the cafés such as Terra Byte or KSA Café, or traditional dining locations such as North or Kennedy Commons, these jobs allow students to serve the community in a necessary way: with food. These fast-paced, hard-working employees are not to be taken for granted, and if you plan on joining this community, be ready to make lots of friends and to learn more about the way Ohio State supplies their students with nutrition.

While both of these job positions fit the bill for good on-campus jobs, the position of a Library Student Assistant is also highly esteemed. But beware before applying: the majority of positions are only available to students who qualify for work-study. This position includes shelving books, assisting patrons, and checking out items along with various specifics for the different libraries.

If you’re looking for an on-campus job this fall, make sure to research the available positions and find which one fits you best. Maybe you’re destined to make the perfect Panini at the Union Market, or possibly the dry pages of stacked books is the perfume you’re cleaving to wear.  Whatever you choose, remember that you can keep your options open– going to a school of this caliber has its own beauty and will ultimately be worthwhile of your tuition dollars.
