8 Classes You'll Regret Not Taking In College

By Victoria Robertson on January 22, 2015

I think we all can agree that being in college is a giant step up from high school in numerous ways. One of our favorites: having the ability to choose your classes, even if it is restricted to a few options.

But from a gen-ed standpoint, there are classes that you will certainly regret not taking while in college. We are here to learn (for the most part), so before you graduate, make sure you run through this list and make sure you have made the most of your college education.

1. Greek Mythology:

While this probably isn’t the class that’s going to pertain the most to your future career choices, it’s one of the most interesting classes college has to offer.

I mean, learning about Greek gods, something most of us are interested in anyway, and getting credit for it?

I mean really, how easy can it be?

2. Accounting:

I know, I know. Why, right?

The last thing most of us want is to take a math class. In fact, if you’re anything like me, you’ve spent a majority of your college career actually avoiding that exact subject.

However, this is probably one of the most pertinent college courses you could take. Even if all you gain from the class is how to budget your money or make a spreadsheet, you’ve gained something you will be able to use for the rest of your life.

3. Physical Education:

You may think you left that behind in high school, but P.E. gets so much better once you’re in college; the classes are more specific in their subject, and you can take classes you have an interest in, such as basketball or yoga, at your university.

So you can not only cross off going to the gym from your list of things to do, but also snatch up some college credit with some of the easiest college classes you’ll probably ever take.

4. Any Art Class:

No, being artsy is not a requirement. Haven’t you ever just wanted to try something new? Or maybe you’ve been putting off that art class because you weren’t sure you’d be good enough?

Well, college is here to save you. Maybe you love photography and have always wanted to take a class, or you always wished you could paint but don’t know a thing about brush strokes.

College is a time meant for exploration, so what better time is there for you to finally take that art class you’ve always wanted to take?

Exactly.

5. Favorite Author:

I know coming from an English major you should probably take this recommendation with a grain of salt, but if your university offers an English course on your favorite author, don’t miss out on it.

While writing essays is nobody’s favorite, and I’m sure that this class will require it, I promise it will be worth it.

Love Edgar Allan Poe? Haven’t had enough time to read all of his works? Well, there’s certainly more of his work to explore than “The Raven,” and a favorite authors course is the perfect outlet to do this.

6. Resume Building/Business Writing:

Again, I apologize for the English related course recommendation. However, you should certainly consider this one very highly.

A resume building class is one that is exceptionally helpful, especially for those graduating from college in the near future.

However, most resume building classes also offer a business writing component in which students learn how to make cover letters, or write professional e-mails, or anything else pertinent to holding a professional career.

For these reasons, this class is essential for students planning on graduating soon, or even for those that would like to obtain this information early on, just to be safe.

7. Leadership Class:

This can literally be any class in which leadership is taught or expected of you. Some classes actually are taught by students, and these students will then teach the next year.

If this is an option offered by your university, I’d strongly recommend taking it.

Leadership always looks good on a resume, and I can guarantee that prospective jobs will require it in some way or another.

8. Child Psychology:

This may seem completely random in comparison with the other classes I’ve mentioned, but I promise you it isn’t a class you’ll regret taking.

Many parents say this taught them more than they could have learned on their own, and especially for people going into fields in which they’ll be working with children, this class is a must.

But even for those not so interested in working with children, this class is interesting, useful and almost a guaranteed easy A, so long as you are willing to put the work in.

Of course, there are so many more college courses that are interesting and pertinent, but these are just a few of my favorites.

So get to studying and good luck for yet another semester!
